How to Start Your Day with a Healthy and Delicious Breakfast Routine
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but it can also be the most challenging one to prepare. You want something that is nutritious, satisfying, and easy to make, but you also don't want to get bored of eating the same thing every morning. That's why I'm going to share with you my breakfast routine a.k.a. Kelly In The Kitch's complete breakfast!
My breakfast routine consists of three main components: a smoothie, a bowl of oatmeal, and a cup of coffee. Each of these elements provides me with essential nutrients, energy, and flavor to kickstart my day. Let me break down each one for you and show you how I make them.
Smoothie
A smoothie is a great way to get in some fruits and veggies in the morning, as well as some protein and healthy fats. I like to use frozen fruits for convenience and creaminess, and I always add some greens like spinach or kale for extra vitamins and minerals. I also add some plant-based milk, yogurt, or nut butter for protein and calcium, and some flax seeds or chia seeds for omega-3s and fiber.
Here is my go-to smoothie recipe:
1 cup of frozen mixed berries
1 banana
1 handful of spinach
1/4 cup of unsweetened almond milk
2 tbsp of plain Greek yogurt
1 tbsp of almond butter
1 tsp of flax seeds
I just blend everything together until smooth and creamy, and enjoy!
Oatmeal
Oatmeal is another staple in my breakfast routine. It's warm, comforting, and filling, and it also has many health benefits. Oats are rich in fiber, which helps lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels, as well as promote digestion and satiety. Oats also contain antioxidants, iron, zinc, magnesium, and B vitamins.
I like to cook my oats on the stovetop with water or milk, and then add some toppings for extra flavor and texture. Some of my favorite toppings are:
Fresh or dried fruits
Nuts or seeds
Cinnamon or nutmeg
Honey or maple syrup
Peanut butter or jam
You can also make your oatmeal ahead of time and reheat it in the microwave in the morning. Or you can try overnight oats, which are oats soaked in milk or yogurt overnight in the fridge. They are ready to eat in the morning without any cooking!
Coffee
Last but not least, I always have a cup of coffee with my breakfast. Coffee not only wakes me up and boosts my mood, but it also has some health benefits. Coffee contains antioxidants, which can protect against oxidative stress and inflammation. Coffee also may lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and some cancers.
I like to brew my coffee with a French press or a drip machine, and then add some milk or creamer for creaminess. I usually drink it black or with a little bit of sugar, but sometimes I like to treat myself with a flavored coffee or a latte.
